Web Exercise #2

There will be no class meeting Wednesday, October 1.  In lieu of class, complete the following which will help you practice for your lift-animation homework exercise.
  • 1. Read through chapter 3 in the Character Animation text if you have not yet done so.
  • 2. Carefully study the “thumbnail” drawings for the 2-d animation of the lift.  Note the major poses and shift in weight.
  • 3. Load the “Goon” rig and keyframe the motion of the lift using just the hips/pelvis area.  Once that timing feels good in play blast video tests, add just a few keyframes through the spine/torso to curve the torso to match the weight transfer suggested in the handrawn poses in the chapter.  (No arms nor object need to be keyframed nor even shown for this — try to get the hips, pelvis, and spine to suggest the movement similar to the drawings).  Stop there and generate a play blast named GoonPartialLift01.mov. (or .avi, etc).
  • 4. Do step 3 again, all the same, except this time try to make the object to lift (which still does not have to be shown nor keyframed) feel ten times heavier than the first time using just the hips, pelvis, and spine.  Stop there and generate a play blast named GoonPartialLift02.mov (or avi, etc).
  • 5. Load the “Groggy” rig. Play around a bit with it.  Do the same as in step 3 and 4 with Groggy, but make the weight of the invisible object to be lifted feel extremely and surprisingly light.  Make a final play blast named GroggyPartialLift.
  • 6. Place these three movie play blasts (or renders if you like) in a WebExercise02 folder in your Dropbox folder.
